The Thing About Burnout Is...

“People are not respecting each other’s time or calendars. I think we need a communications training. Can you help us?”

 

“We need a training on managing remotely. Also, on how managers can help their teams not burn out. Can you help us?”

 

“We need a manager training. There’s a lot of burnout in our industry. Can you train our managers to have more empathy?” 

 

These are real requests I’ve received from clients, clients with good intentions who wish to make positive change in their workplace. They want to inspire better manners, more positivity, better feedback and communication, more empathy and positive behaviors. 

Yet the underlying issue here - ending the burnout epidemic - is not going to be solved just because someone does a training.

Strengthsfinder? Empathy vs. Not-Empathy

I recently revisited my Clifton Strengthsfinder results. If you’re not familiar with this assessment, here’s a quick overview:

  • A psychologist named Don Clifton decided it made more sense to focus on developing people’s strengths than their faults. Clifton is considered the father of strengths-based psychology.

  • The Strengthsfinder is a set of 34 strengths present to different degrees in every human being.

  • The assessment gives you a deeper understanding of which of these strengths are strongest for you.

One of the interesting, yet difficult, things about Strengthsfinder is that they use their own language. For example, one of my top five strengths is Intellection. This is not a common word. The dictionary will tell you that Intellection simply means, “an act of intellect, thought, reason.” According to Strengthsfinder, someone with the Intellection strength is introspective and appreciates intellectual discussions. Mediator Tips: Resolve Conflict at Work

The latest “Mediator Tips” will be offered in person at our workshop on April 4, 2019. The title is - simply - Resolve Conflict at Work. Register here (tickets are just $20 each).

It’s a small, intensive workshop limited to just 12 participants. The participants should be managers, especially:

  • someone new to managing a team,

  • someone who wants to better understand how to manage a team for minimal conflicts and optimal engagement,

  • or someone who’s been managing people for a while but is dealing with a lot of different personalities - or conflicts!
